I (foolishly) tried using a dimmable LED with my c-Bus set-up and, after a brief crackle and a blown out LED light, I appear to have a problem with my 8 channel dimmer unit. I have replaced the LED lights with normal ones but the affected channel is permanently ON and the local on/off toggle on the dimmer unit will not switch it off. The only way I can switch the lights off is by tripping the fuse switch :(

Is it broken or is this something that can be rectified?

Assuming it is a 4 or 8-channel DIN Leading Edge dimmer, it is almost certain that the Triac inside the dimmer has become damaged. You will either need to return the unit to Clipsal for repair or accept that one of your channels is dead.

When replacing incandescent/halogen lamps with LED units it is very important to ensure that you use good quality units that are designed to work with the kind of dimmer that you have.

If your unit is out of warranty and you have some electronic skills there is a thread that talks about repairing a dimmer here.

    Not a good LED.

AS the other thread suggests, I'd first recommend looking on eBay to see if you can get a replacement for the whole unit.

If the unit is less than 2 years old, you might even get away with a warranty repair (but you'd be w/o the unit and the lighting for the duration). After all, the unit is supposed to work with lamps. Trouble is, sounds like a dodgy LED Lamp so a bunch of blame-storming is to be expected.

If more than 2 years old you can get a repair done.

If you must DIY, please be careful. The TRIAC will most likely be available from RS or Element14 - or if not, and you know what you are doing a functionally equivalent should be available. HOWEVER please don't take apart a unit thats inside warranty because that will surely void it. If outside warranty then be very very careful, watch out for the ribbon cable (which is a pain to reassemble). Provided you know how to solder things, replacing the TRIAC is the easy part. Getting the unit apart is difficult.
