    Hi

Is there a trick to getting the C-Bus Diagnostic 1.8.1 running ??????

I've downloaded it to 3 Windows XP computers and it crashes on all 3 with a windows error.

    Thanks

    What is the error message?

Post a screen shot if you can.

Can you please accurately describe the steps you are going through to see the crash?

    • Does is crash during the install process?
    • Does it crash when you try to run it?
    • Does it crash when you try and connect to a network?
    • What error message are you seeing?
    • Are you using serial, USB or Ethernet for your interface?
    • Is your version of Windows non-English?
    • Is the user account an Administrator or a Guest?
    • Do you have C-Bus Toolkit, and hence the USB drivers, installed? If so, which version of Toolkit?
    • Do other C-Bus applications (Toolkit, PICED, MARPA, CIRCA, HomeGate/Schedule+, etc) work normally?

Hi Darren I've inserted replies above

I have one computer I want to use for monitoring and the replies above refer to it. That computer has never run any other C-bus software

I also have a computer with current version of ToolKit , PICED, all working over Ethernet, and the Diagnostic won't run.

Both computers are running XP Home.

I then tried to download and run the diag on my wife's computer and it crashed on that when I tried to run it

All downloads are from the CIS site.

    Regards
    Michael

Have you tried powering down the PC and turning the power off at the wall socket.

It is important to turn the mains power off to the PC for at least 5 minutes?..

This is all very odd. I just downloaded it and it ran fine. I don't recall anyone else having problems either.

Unfortunately, the error message doesn't tell us anything useful.

I wonder whether the installer file got corrupted somehow when you downloaded it. Try downloading the file again and see if that makes a difference.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then you will need to have a think about what your three computers have in common, but is different to most (all?) other computers where the software runs fine. Nothing in particular comes to mind, but it could be things like:
    1. A virus
    2. Some unusual software
    3. A driver (this is quite likely)
    4. Some aspect of the PC hardware
    5. Operating system or settings (like using a non-English language)

Remember the same problem I had on new PC.
It seemed to be cause by no Windows Registry entry for a usb port, i hacked a entry and it worked.

Looks like it bombs when no entry found.

    Good point Dave.

If your computers all have no COM ports, it may cause the software to crash (I haven't actually tested this). If that is the case, then you may be able to prevent this error by creating the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM registry key. Before you do this, backup the registry. If you don't know how to hack the registry, then you should probably avoid attempting this.

That helps. We know the cause now, and have a new Diagnostic Utility coming soon which will remove the exception. It also adds a lot of new goodies.
