I am having trouble getting a direct connection to an existing colour screen-approx 6 yrs old.I have installed many different types of screens from new and never had any problems but this is a job that i did not install and the installer did not leave owner any cd or information.I have to add to the c-bus network(already completed) and modify the screen.
This is information that i have
Local Area connection IP Address 169.254.250.31
    Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
With the red cable connected to the screen it asks me to confirm the ip address on the screen as 169.254.250.1. I confirm that address on the screen and it confirms the direct connection. When I then click ok to continue within the transfer utility it comes up with unexpected connection failure-unable to connect to device at IP address 169.254.250.1 Please check the address and network connection.
The subnet on the screen confirms 255.255.0.0
As this is a very early screen do you know of any changes that could be causing this ie different connection cable etc.
    Any help would be apprecitaed

You have given two different IP Addresses. Where was the first one (169.254.250.31) from?

Have you tried connecting the PC and Colour C-Touch using an Ethernet Switch or Hub, instead of a cross-over cable? This tends to be more reliable for some reason.

Thanks for info. Will try hub next week and let you know if ok.I have had no problems using the red crossover lead with all the new screens that I have installed so if nothing else obvious hope hub works.
    Thanks for help so far.

Tried hub today and still the same.Manually set the P/C IP address to 169.254.250.1 subnet 255.255.0.0. When using transfer utility it asked to select IP Address 169.254.250.2 on screen(Also checked subnet 255.255.0.0).Selected yes a nd waited for confirmation. Then selecting ok on transfer utilty on P/C came up with the same unexpected connection error.Unable to connect to 169.154.250.2 Check your ip address and network. As I said previously never had any dramas before. Is it possibly due to old firmware in the screen or a setting that the previous installer has used.I do not think he was very experianced so maybe he has selected something that is causing this. What about DNS server or default gateway settings.
Any other ideas please let me know.
    Thanks again.

I think you need to set your touchscreen and PC to a fixed IP addresses (the dialogue for setting the touchscreen comes up after booting). Lets say set it to 192.168.1.2 and the gateway address 192.168.1.1

    netmask should be 255.255.255.0

Now set your PC (fixed IP address) to 192.168.1.1 with a gateway address of 192.168.1.1.

Do this with a cross-over cable

Thanks for info but still no good.set up P/C IP 192.168.1.1 gateway same ,submask 255.255.255.0 screen 192.168.1.2 gateway 192.168.1.1 submask 255.255.255.0 As before it asks me to confirm IP address on screen and then after accepting and proceeding on P/C comes up with same error -unable to connect to the device at IP address 192.168.1.2 Please check the address and network connection. Also tried another red crossover cable with the same result.A couple of other things I noticed.when changing the subnet on the screen from 255.255.0.0 to 255.255.255.0 it came up with an error-Netsh failed to set static IP.error occured warning could not obtain host information from machine (clipsal.ctc) some commands may not be available ... is not an acceptable value for address.
Also whenever I go to try a direct connection-as I should be using the red cable it resets the submask of the screen back to 255.255.0.0 I cant change it as the boxes are there to change it but no keyboard on screen to do so.
Hope this extra information may provide clue to problem.
    Thanks again

Does you PC have a firewall on it? Something like Symantec endpoint protection will cause you grief.

    No.

Something about this doesn't quite seem right. Can you describe the process you are using to set the static IP Address in the Colour C-Touch?

I have tried almost all options. On the Colour C-Touch connection wizard selecting direct connect then it requests that I accept the IP address shown in the transfer utility on the screen. At the screen I accept that IP address and hit OK.(It confirms Address type was set to Direct Connect)The subnet mask is blank and I cannot insert any information in although I can get the cursor to go there (no key pad appears). It does find the screen (NewUser @192.168.1.2 )If I then go to the Transfer Utility to continue it comes up with the Unexpected connection error as stated before. On all other screens no problems.I have also selected the other option on to set an IP Address on the screen and selected the IP Address/Submask /Default gateway but whenever I go to direct connect it changes the submask back to 255.255.0.0
I have also tried local connection on the transfer utility rather than direct connection but still no good.I will probably have to give you guys at Tech support a ring on Monday
    Thanks Again

All good but not sure what fix was.Rebooted colour screen and connected via router set as DHCP Server as you suggested and no problems.Upgraded firmware and downloaded project from screen to P/C ready to start editing. Not sure if it was rebooting the screen or connecting via router that fixed it.Neither of these have I had to do previously to connect to a colour screen but good to know for the next time.
Thanks to the 2 Darrens for all the help
