We are having a problem with a new installation where the installation has to be in line with the 17 edition wiring regs, now circuits have to be protected by RCD's. The dimmers keep taking the breakers out. If we change the breaker to a normal MCB, the system works fine. So we can only think that the dimmers are taking the RCD out on earth leakage. Since we can not use the MCB solution due to the regs, has anyone had this issue before.
We have approx 12No 8 Channel 1A Dimmer Modules installed, and each one has its own RCD.
IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH THE DIMMER MODULES not complying with the new regs in the UK, if so i can see CBUS loosing a lot of trade.
Can anyone help with any suggestions.

This doesn't sound right to me... What happens if you connect the lights to the line side of the dimmer (with the RCD, but no C-Bus dimmer). This problem sounds like mixed neutrals. Please confirm the RCD(s) don't trip with the dimmer(s) out of circuit

    Cheers

If you take circuits out of the dimmer and connect they stright to the RCD then no problem. The circuit works fine and does not trip.
Put the circuit back through the dimmer and the RCD trips.

I had a NEW dimmer once that the power supply in the dimmer was tripping the earth leakage. swapped the dimmer.

Are all 12 RCD's tripping, if so you have crossed neutrals between your RCD's. Do you have the 240V control input / 240V load input / 240V load outputs all connectted to the same neutral coming out of the RCD?

I have been using dimmers with RCD's in Australia for years and have done the same over in the UK with no problems.

I'd go back to basics and disconnect all your loads cables (live and neutral) so that all that is connected to the RCD is the dimmer module (control and load side) and nothing else. If the RCD doesnt't trip start adding a load circuit one at a time (test it on/off) until the unit trips. ONce you find the load that is tripping it trace it back.

Good luck, Once you've got your head around RCD's it easy - you English are just a little behind the times. I'm on a job now with the same problem (lutron thou) and it was all crossed neutrals.

I have used RCBo's on dimmers which have been controling loads outside for the past few years and never had a rcbo trip,

I think you need to check your neutrals.

    PROBLEM SOLVED.
Never trust what the spark says on site. After having various bits of my body chewed by the clients builder and Sparks, I went to site to have another look at the problem. And of course theres the spark still not able to find whats wrong. ( i could say something not very nice). But he had two major problems which i pointed out to him.
    1. The netrual BAR was not insulated from the panel EARTH.
    2. He had commoned up all of the neutrals from the our lighting panel in his Dist Board without telling us. (Very Bad Boy)
    But thanks to veryone involved.
