    Hey guys,

Well carried out my first C-Bus Installation in the past week without a glitch! :)

One query, I have a L5508D1A operating 3x50W dimmable electronic transformers per channel. All aspects of the installation work perfectly. The L5508D1A does however give off a light buzzing sound when the dimmer is set to a value not 0% or 100%. Is this normal?

The reason I ask this that firstly it is my first installation so I don't know if it is normal. Secondly, I got on to my supplier of the transformers to ensure they were leading edge compatible before getting the L5508D1A to be on the safe side. He assured me (verbally) that they were leading edge, but he tends to say what suits himself at times.

So basically with the DIN rail box cover removed, is it normal to hear a buzz coming from the dimmer unit (when at non 0% or 100% setting). By a buzz I mean like a bee flying across the room! Just want to be sure about the transformers really.

    thanks,

    rob

    Thanks Znelbok,

Just didnt occur to me at the time. Plenty info on it here alright! I'm probably going to put the cat amongst the pigeons asking this; but should the levels where this buzzing occurs be avoided? i.e. Is there any opinions/experience as to whether this 'buzzing' may shorten the life of the dimmer? Just looking at it from a practical point of view!

    cheers again

    Not really,
You will find that pretty much every dimmer buzzes during normal operation. Avoiding the levels where bussing occurs wont extend or shorten the life of the dimmer by any noticable amount.

most of clipsal competitors on lighting control market have made their quiet dimmers long time ago.

I wonder if new Universal dimmer makes same noise?

    Inductors make the noise.

All dimmers have inductors or some kind.

Buzz or no buzz won't make any effect on dimmer life.

You should find the new universal dimmer is a lot quieter.
