i have just bought a 5502dal, but unluckyly, after i read the installation instructionsn book, i have a little confused..

what does the dali power supply mean in wiring instruction part.
when i buy a dali ballast, the supplier doesn't told me that the dali need a power supply.. for information the ballast i bought was osram.

is that mean we need to creat a dali network it self, maybe basic dali network, dali easy, or dali advaced that provided by osram??

    Dali Ps

    Hi,

Each DALI network needs one power supply to function. I'm sure there's some different ones out there, but this is the one i've seen most commonly:
    http://www.tridonicatco.com/kms/cms/kms.php?id=76&str_id=534&det_back=1

Also, i think if you talk to your Clipsal sales bloke there is a bundle you can buy with a 5502DAL and 2 DALI power supplies.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

DALI power supplies are all supposed to be compatible to all DALI ballasts.

However, in the land of DALI, you are pretty much on your own. Ballast makers won't support you (they will sell to you but after that.... tough...).

So you will have to try a few things and find what works effectively for you.

    Ashleigh,

You are a bit down on the world of DALI. I have a pretty good idea why - DALI deployed on a large scale becomes a lighting control "system" unto itself which is obviously a competitive situation to C-Bus. From my experiences, DALI is usually deployed to a percentage(%?) of the install (typically fluoros) and a traditional (if I can call it that) lighting control solution is deployed for the rest of the lighting. The main area DALI lacks is the user interface, switches touch screens etc, and this is where C-Bus leads the globe. DALI is simple, clever and robust so I think it is here to stay. ;)

On the original question you won't go wrong if you try to stick to Tridonic. They do DALI well. They have tools to commission ballasts and their quality is good - most of the time. Osram's support for tools etc is pathetic, unless they have picked up their game in the last several months.

If you use a Tridonic power supply to power your DALI network you should not have any problems with Osram fittings...

It can be unwise to attribute motive :)

Better to tell it like I see it.

From where I sit, DALI works... but I get to hear the stories of things not going so well also. Software / commissioning support varies widely, ballast manufacturers support likewise. I'm not in any position to recommend brands, to do so would be an unfounded endorsement.

I simply offer the caution: the ballast manufacturers desire is to sell ballasts. Period. If they break, or don't work as expected, you may or may not get support. I've heard of sites where support has been non-existent, I've heard of sites where things have gone well. I've heard of abnormally high failure rates after install as well.

Putting the whole picture together... fine... use it. Beware that you need to know what you are doing. If you run into problems you may need to consult a specialist. This is no different to many other products, system & services (think your kids PC !!).

hi master, have some problem again..
try to combine our C-Bus dali Gateway with osram dali easy product. but why the ballast still unseenable on toolkit (in the dali unit, status TAB). is that we need to program the ballast first, i mean addressing it before it can be readable by c-bus toolkit. the toolkit 1 use is version 1.7.4. the dali gate way firware is : 3.2

or maybe is that mean the dali easy from osram doesn't generate DALI Data.

beside dali PS, is that we need another hardware or sofware to make this dali network work, and can be combined with c-bus system.

    thanks..

You need DALI commissioning software to assign addresses to your DALI ballasts.

You need to do this before they can be seen and used by the DALI gateway.

what sofware i should use for that. is that free..

so that mean, i just need a cbus network with dali gateway, osram dali ballast for T% lamp, dali power Supply ( any Brand) and a sofware for commissioning the ballast. that it?

In simplistic terms, think of DALI as a complete control system, basically the same as C-Bus. (yes I know it isn't really, but for discussion that will be OK).

So, you first must commission the DALI system. Assign each ballast a DALI address, test the groups, etc. You must have the DALI comms working properly, etc. After you have the DALI system commissioned, only then can you start with the C-Bus side.

The C-Bus DALI Gateway simply provides a way to map C-Bus Groups to DALI Groups. So, you might set up a "mapping" that says "C-Bus Group A2 controls DALI Group 12".

The reason that DALI is annoying on C-Bus is that it's effectively layering one control system (C-Bus) over the top of another control system (DALI).

So, it's double-commissioning. And the reasons it rarely works properly is because if you don't commission the DALI properly, then the thing will never work properly when C-Bus is driving it. And if something goes wrong with Comms, you have to test both networks independently to see what is causing the problem.

Oh - and the reason that you need DALI Power Supplies is the same reason that you need C-Bus Power Supplies. To make the network functional.

You have to get the entire DALI network up and running as a "stand-alone" - and only then can C-Bus tell that network what to "do".

If you only want to dim fluorescents, the DALI is probably the worst (most complex) way of doing it. In other words - if you don't specifically know why you need to be using a DALI Network, then you almost certainly shouldn't be using one.

    Excellent summary JohnC.

Zip_cool, it's also worth noting that you should only ever have a single DALI power supply connected to the network. In simple terms, DALI devices communicate by momentarily shorting out the bus to generate the data bits and they depend on the current limiting in the power supply to stop the switching electronics from frying.

yeah, this is my first time of using dali in C-Bus. at first i thought is that c-bus Dali gateway just a liitle same like DSI or 1-10 module, the have supply the power for dali. but unfortunately, when the module come, i just realize that the module doesn't has a inbuilt power supply. not like othet brand, they ussually have an inbuilt power supply. and the second is that i thought from c-bus we can commissioning the dali, but yeah again, doesn't look as simple as what i thought.

btw, that all guru for the help and support. so now what i should do is to find a dali power supply and a dalitool for commissioning the dali network.

can someone give me a advice where i can get this to item. in here, i have ask the osram ppl, they don't have the dali power suuply module only. what they have is it inbuilt with they dali controller. and the tridonic ppl, unluckyly they doesn't have a stock here.

    thanks..

the smallest dali system is : ballasts + controller with powersupply+computer

well if the controller do not have inbuilt power supply, you can own made one, just use a 15v or 16v transformer , connect through a 5W 60-100 OHM resistor to DALI BUS.

You don't have to reply to every single thread here relating to DALI, that is 12 months old or more...

This forum is for C-Bus products. One C-Bus product is a C-Bus <-> DALI gateway. I think you'll struggle to find anyone on this forum who knows anything about the ABB DALI Gateway, since it's most likely to be a gateway between KNX and DALI.
