Have an installation in a Hospital and have been installing extra units using toolkit latest ver 1.1.7 (think thats right) c-touch B&W screen (latest ver Piced) and 57 units. When I installed a new unit this afternoon all went well until I tried to scan network and setup the new unit's (4 channel relay 20A new type) channels, I had setup the units address previously on test bed and the network did find this unit but when I double clicked on unit the scan would go to 90% and slow down until it failed to communicate with unit after checking all connections and rebooting PC I did get to connect to unit and add my settings to unit. Once I tried to transfer info to Data Base this then failed to transfer ?. I kept trying until I succeeded but it took numerous attempts to do so, checked system voltage and it was 31.2 volts. Could this be a problem ?
Should also note that in the past when checking the Network not all units are seen to be on the newwork on occasions and at other times they are ?. Hope this is not too confusing.

Had the same sort of thing happen on a new job, serial numbers there muliple times on different units etc.
Ended up being the 9pin cable that was the trouble, changed and all was ok.
Cut other cable into many bits, jumped up and down on it and into bin.

    Thanks Dave
Will try that, on closer inspection Ive found large amounts of c-bus cable above switch drops and above our switchboards which house c-bus relays in there own enclosures, this Ive found right through the Hospital on all floors (3 in total). Whats more I just found one of these loops of coiled c-bus cable pinned under some plasterboard sheeting. I intend freeing this cable and checking it for any damage or kinks, damn those builders  !!. I bought one of clipsals c-bus network analyser and it indicated there was excessive cable on network, could this also be part of the problem ?, As a precaution I will reduce the size of these coiled cables and see if this helps plus I will change that 9 pin serial cable too.

    regards

    Graeme

Got rid of that coiled cable stuck under plaster sheet and found some cable had been nicked (outer sheath only) but still my problem remains ?. The other thing that is a mystery is ther are 2 older type relay units on the same cbus bus cable that can be accessed by Toolkit whithout a hitch  , the new unit is a learn enable type, but I dont think this is the problem or is it ?.
Might try another relay unit (same type learn units) and see what happens, as I have some more in the workshop.
Graeme. GEE I LIKE CBUS when it works! ;)

    Fault Found YA !!!!

Got inspired today and determined to find the reason for that "Not Responding Message" when looking at that new relay. Anyway first I changed the looping cable that came with the c bus relay with a longer cable (workshop made) , this did nothing to fix the problem. Then I cut that loop out of the wall near Peri op Hospital Ward, where that c bus cable was stuck under that plasterboard wall, we found the cable had been slightly damaged on the outer sheath but after fixing this problem the same problem existed, Damn !. Then I changed the relay with a new unit, we did this because the other units next to the new unit would respond normally on the Toolkit software.
This got me thinking and as this can take some time due to my age and the good times I had in the 70's I tried re-crimping the RJ45's on all the relays in the board HA Presto it now works OK :-D :-D .
Mr Clipsal instructor from March 05 would give me a pat on the back or ask me why it took so long to find !.
I can blame the electricians who put the other relay in the switchboard, not me for a change ! ;-)

    Regards

    Graeme :)

I'm really glad to hear of your success.

Roughly 98 out of 100 "wierd" problems are due to two causes:

    - wiring
    - too many or not enough network burdens

(If you'll excuse the bad joke, the "wierd" problems are usually "wired" problems :D )

Unfortunately, wiring is hard to track down. It is a good argument for doing it right in the first place - but there are often circumstances which make this difficult or impossible also.
