You should be using C-Gate 2.6 that ships with C-Bus Toolkit 1.6.1 and not C-Gate 1.5.

    Richo,

The Server X installation "work around" as specified by CIS was to install C-Gate 1.5, then install Server X and then upgrade C-Gate...

There is no work around required. Just download and install ServerX

    Ok

Bit Confused I have an Application note in front of me (Note 06-049-1 15th Aug 2006) telling me to Install C-gate V1.5 first.

so I just install toolkit 1.6.1 then serverX then re-install lastest edition of toolkit and Home gate I give it a go thanks

Arrr.... an updated ServerX was released on 1st December 2006. So all you need to do is Install each application once. I will get that application note cancelled and ensure Techsupport are aware of the changed circumstances.

Can't install ServerX - Java version problems

    Hey All,

I've tried to install ServerX tonight but my problems look similar to those others have encountered.

Attempting to install either ServerX or the Java SDK both result in messages telling me my Runtime Environment version is greater than the Java Development Kit version, then the installer is forced closed by Windows.

I'm running C-Gate 2.6.1, Toolkit 1.7.4, and I'm trying the versions of ServerX and Java SDK downloaded from the CIS website tonight. The PC is running Java version "1.6.0_03".

If it's at all possible I'd like to avoid destabilising my PC by engaging in a cycle of uninstalling all my Clipsal software, re-installing C-Gate 1.5, then ServerX and Toolkit and PICED updates without some confidence that it's the right process to follow.

Please tell me there's an easier solution??!

I've searched this site for guidance, but on finding too many conflicting posts from the CIS authorities, I thought I should ask rather than make a mess of an otherwise functioning PC.

    Thanks,

    Greig.

You should not need to installed C-Gate 1.5. Please don't.

The errors you have relate to the Java version, it's something tied up with that, not the C-Gate version. Though exactly what / why, I'm not sure :(

Java is installed in 2 parts. The runtime JRE and the development kit JDK. Server X requires that you have the JDK installed. However the JDK requires that you have the same version JRE installed.

    You options are:

    A) Uninstall the current version of Java JRE you have and then install ServerX and the Java SDK.

    B) Try installing the JSDK for the version of the JRE you have installed and see if ServerX is happy with that. Note, I recall there being issues with any spaces in the path in which you install the SDK so don't use the default install path if you download the current SDK. (Note: this is what the dialog tells you to do).

There should be no need to uninstall any Clipsal software and certainly don't install C-gate 1.5, the current version of ServerX uses C-gate 2.

    Still no luck with ServerX

Gents, despite the advice (for which I thank you), still no luck last night.

I exorcised all Java from my PC and installed the Clipsal version of the JDK successfully, but when I went to install ServerX it again thought there was a discrepancy between JRE & JSK:

I thought perhaps the order was wrong (I can't find anything dictating the correct install sequence) so I removed Java again, then ran ServerX - but it told me I needed Java 1.4.1 or later, before crashing:

ServerX seems a temperamental cow, so I'll give the Support crew a ring today and share some of my misery with them. :p

(I've suspended virus-checking during the above BTW).

I have a spare machine here and I might move to it if I can't make any immediate headway.

If/when I get this sorted I'll post here for the benefit of those who follow.

    Today's update:

Andrew @ CIS tells me a new build of the JAVA SDK is in the process of being assembled, so I'll wait until that's available on the Downloads site and then try to break it. :p

Turns out there are some subtle things in there (and a pain in the neck), to handle them the ServerX installer does a lot of compatibility checks. Also turns out they were way too paranoid.

New build coming out very soon with more sensible checking and the latest JDK.

The ServerX installer has been updated to loosen the requirements on java versioning of the JDK & JRE.

This problem was caused by auto updates in java that update the JRE without updating the JDK. The toolkit full installer also carries the JRE installer. As Toolkit is updated it would once again break the java versioning between the JDK and JRE. Auto updated and so forth will no longer break the installer. Paranoia code removed.

To fix problems download the new ServerX installer and JDK installer as these have both been updated.

    Regards,

    Matty.

Woo hoo!! ServerX installed and working OK!

Thanks all, I've been able to d/l and install the latest serverX build and it's behaving...

I did find I needed to set the project.default and project.start values in "C-GateConfig.txt", but of course searching the forums revealed those gems.

(I wonder if there's a button in Toolkit that's able to do that, but I've not found yet??)

All my remaining problems are Java, so of my own doing. :D

Code snippets above and beyond the Simple & Complex demo's in the ServerX installation always welcomed...
