    WAN Access

    Hi Tony,

App looks excellent, from your video it looks like you only have the ability to configure a LAN address, is it possible, or will it be possible in the future to add a WAN address or host name, FQDN or Dynamic DNS name etc & be able to select between the two.

The reason I ask is while waiting for an iPhone App, I wrote a series of iPhone friendly web pages & configured a web server to handle both LAN & WAN access, I now feel that if I try to offer anything less that it will not be received well. The ability to access remotely was very well received & is used fully, adding this ability if not already available would be well worth the effort.

Thanks for what looks like an excellent addition to the C-Bus world.

Would it not be a security concern opening up the cbus port to external access anyway?

At least with a web server doing the cbus interface you can control by IP what device is allowed to send to the cbus - ie, only the web server. But with iPhones talking directly to an externally translated port number you likely wouldn't be able to lock it down to single addresses as they'd likely be dynamicly assigned through the telco for their data connection.... Basically meaning anyone who did a port scan and found that port open could start sending commands into the cbus......

Just a thought since as useful as this app is looking like it will be, we certainly won't be recommending it to our customers for external access unless some level of secure authentication can be built in other than a restricted list of IP addresses being able to talk to c-gate or the cni.

    Just my thoughts..

    Cheers

    Al

I am also looking forward to the app. I have a similar question. How does one transfer the configuration to a second iPhone?

We are still waiting for Apple to make this available on the Apps Store apparently they have lots of submissions so the normal turn around time has been extended. Will keep you informed but expect by mid week at the latest.

Please, please note.....THIS APP DOES NOT WORK WITH WISER!!!!! It uses the CNI from the Wiser. Whilst this App is running, the Wiser is rendered inoperable with comms to C-Bus. This is a great risk if you have schedules or triggered scenes running on Wiser and you still expect them to work!

It is strongly advised not to use this with Wiser on any customers' installations. If you must use this App, install another CNI

    Thanks for your comments.

I did cover this in the first page of this thread and advised that Our Wiser compatibility was with the CNI in the Wiser. It is the Network CNI that is only allowing one connection at a time so not much we can do. The iPhone or iPod Touch has a default time on Auto-Lock of 1 minute which blanks the screen and puts it into sleep mode. Will confirm tomorrow but I believe this will the cut the connection to the CNI thus giving control back to the Wiser therefore this should not cause your clients any big issues.

Yes, this was picked up. I want to however make it perfectly clear, that whilst this app is running, Wiser cannot communicate with C-Bus. This also extends to all of the UI's such as web, Projector etc which allows for up to 6 concurrent connections. None will work (to/from C-Bus) whilst this app is running.

BTW, a Nokia app will be available for Wiser in the next release (due out any day) with an IPhone/Itouch in the release after that. Both Apps will be free and will not lock-out Wiser... you won't need another CNI and they will work concurrently with other UI's locally or remotely.

Thanks for the info, obviously you work for Clipsal as your comments have a very clear bias.

The bottom line here is it the the CNI that won't accept multiple connections not the Wiser, not the app, so make the CNI accept multiple connections, simple:rolleyes:

You seem to be missing the whole point of our app. It is not a replacement for Wiser or intended to steal Wiser sales, but rather an option for people who would like iPhone/iPod Touch control of their C-Bus with the least equipment installed as possible.

This would include people who have C-Bus but no touchscreen at present and would like to enhance there current system.

As it turns out it can also include people who currently have a Wiser and are able to connect without getting an additional CNI.

No, wiser will not run while this is going on, we never said it would.

The C-Gate version of our app likewise can hold multiple connections at once.

This app is intended as a complimentary feature to a C-Bus install, I get the impression you are somehow threatened by it?

Whilst your app will be free (when it's made of course), the cost of our app and a CNI will still be half that of a Wiser and the future enhancements
will make it even more attractive with features such as:

Scene control - Free upgrade to existing users
Add Pictures - Free upgrade to existing users
C-Gate version - Free upgrade to existing users, already done, to be release in first upgrade
Icon choices - Free upgrade to existing users
Remote Access - Free upgrade to existing users (with security features) via Wi-Fi or 3g
Easy Backup Function - Free upgrade to existing users
Temperature Unit control - Free upgrade to existing users
Blind Control - Free upgrade to existing users

We are also looking at several other ethernet to serial devices that we are going to try and hook up to a standard serial PCI.

Correct... I do work for Clipsal.

Tony, you have been given clear air to communicate your product to the community here without being impeded.

My purpose with my response(s) have been to make it crystal clear on what using your app with a Wiser will do.

Please remember one of the rules of this forum

    No Commercial Purposes, No Advertising

There is sometimes a fine line between telling the world you have a wonderful thing, and outright attempts at selling.

This site is not a sales channel, it is not available for commercial exploitation. Users who want to sell products, services, systems or goods should go somewhere else.

Tony, your last post is a direct attempt to sell!

All of your posts have been about your product!

You have made the community aware of your product and where it can be procured.

    Consider yourself warned!

The CNI is what it is. Always has been.

Let me make things very plain. The cbus connection via a CNI is a stateful connection.

In plain terms, this means that the device attached to the CNI thinks, assumes, and has AN EXCLUSIVE CONNECTION.

The moment you try and force multiple connections into a CNI, all hell breaks loose because the devices that have the connections CAN AND DO make assumptions about the operating mode of the CNI.

For this reason, cgate goes to a vast amount of trouble to manage multiple clients, and furthermore, clients don't talk raw cbus protocols to cgate. They talk a higher-level language to cgate which in turn manages the multiplexing and demultiplexing of the interface and the translation to cbus-land.

And also for these reasons the PCI and CNI can't and never will support multiple clients connected at the same time.

Hmm. Turning into a bun-fight. Seems like a commercial sales job going on here.

Thats against forum rules and its interrupted my holiday in Bolivia. Sigh.

    Closing thread.
