I've been looking at the iPhone C-Bus price list, and the prices are pretty high (e.g. $160 retail for a 4 button plate).

Anywhere where you can get them cheaper than that, or even if there are other producers of compatible equipment?

Go to a sale website where you can bid on them.

Otherwise, phone your local guru and ask them if they have any spares.

Last resort ... do a course which includes discounted starter kit.

    Who pay's retail?

I don't know why clipsal publish a retail price. Almost anyone can walk into an electrical wholesaler and pay trade price.
C-bus is a proprietary system so there aren't really "other branded" products you can use. It is a great system but in my experience, only as good as the installer's execution. Sadly there are many C-bus systems out there that don't do anything more than a standard light switch does.....
