    Windows 98(SE) is an unsupported platform, but it should actually work. You are more likely to have problem because old laptops don't have enough RAM. But it should still work, just spend ages thrashing your harddisk swapping memory on and off your page file. However, it is likely that future version will stop working on Windows 98 so having the USB<->RS232 adapter is a much better way to go.

    Don't forget Richo mentioned the Dontronics adapter earlier in this thread. I am pretty sure they are SA based so you should be able to get hold of one pretty easy and the are know to work well with C-Bus gear.

    SA.... I hope he doesn't hear you saying that :) Tullamarine, Melbourne Victoria, is what I think Phil is trying to say :)

    And everything else I've thrown at them, (just to second the opinion). They are the best unit to get.

    Cheers

    I was sort of close :(

    rhamer - you know what they say about Melbourne ?

    The best thing about Melbourne is passing through 2000 feet, gear up, flaps zero, on climb to flight level 350 (35,000 feet) direct to Sydney. :p

    Personally I don't think that is very nice ;)

    Back on the Dontronics the only thing I have found it doesn't work on is my La Crosse 3600 weather station. When I buzzed out the serial lead that came with the weather station (RJ - D9) there is no connection (wire) on pin 2 of the D9. I always thought the min was pins 2 & 3 for TX - RX and 5 for signal ground. Any ideas :confused:

    PS when I connect to the serial on my "previous" dell laptop two way comms worked fine ????

    Sometimes one of the signal lines gets used as a low speed sync data line.

    This appears to be the case with that unit.

    Code:
    RS232 Signal  Direction  Description
    RxD   Not used
    TxD --> The meaning of this signal is not clear. Through TxD are sent "U" characters (hex: 55).
    DTR  -->  Data output.
    RTS  -->  Clock.
    CTS  <--  Data input.
    DSR <-- ? - we use it only in initialization procedure
