As I understand it, it's not possible to design screens for a portrait orientation of C-Touch, is this correct?

Furthermore, at least for the colour screens, I've seen comments to the effect that in that orientation the hardware would overheat. Does that apply to the mono screens?

The reason I ask is that a contractor has installed one in that orientation. If we have the option to redesign the screens that is something we have to consider, on the other hand if leaving it that way is an overheating or other hardware risk then we need to tell them to correct it. Otherwise they'll probably just live with it as it is.

    My opinion only
I do not think heat would be a problem based on its current draw.
However viewing angle may be, see the installation guide and the fact that the bottom of the screen has slots in it for removal.
Designing a project would be challenging as you would have to create images for the text to get it the right way and modify the tools page.
Get it mounted the right way as the customer will hold you responsible when they notice it does not look right.
