I have been backing up one and then restoring the others, is there a more elgant way?
should / can i connect multiple instances of homegate to one com port?

Do you mean you are trying to keep the C-Bus database synchronised between multiple computers? If so, then the project file (XML) can just be copied from one computer to the other, or you can do it via the backup and restore process.

C-Gate can connect to a PCI on a COM port and serve multiple instances of HomeGate.

The project is created in PICED and then transferred to the Colour C-Touch using the Transfer Utility.
