I would like to try and save myself some money by buying some DIN Relay units from Ebay but obviously I won't know what firmware versions I may get.

Can someone shed some light on where the intelligence resides please ?

Would I be correct to assume that the relay units are pretty 'dumb' (apologies to whoever spent his working hours writing the relay firmware :)) so it won't matter how old the relay units are as they just switch on or off when instructed, and it is the switches and other input units that contain the intelligent firmware ?

Are there any firmware versions that introduced new features or cured significant bugs from early versions that I should aim for ?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree with the idea that the relays are 'dumb' ?

    Any info gratefully received.

    Thanks

    No relay units are "dumb".

However if you want a unit that switches on and off then anything you buy off eBay that is in DIN should be fine. You will (most likely) get firmware 1.3 or later, and all those versions should be just dandy for a relay doing relay stuff.

From the first firmware released for DIN C-Bus relays have had similar features:

    adjustable turn-on threshold
Logic capability with other groups in the unit
    configurable power-up state
restrike timers for use with HID lighting

Later firmware includes a few new 'system' features to speed-up communications and respond to some system maintenance commands, but none of these changes would affect operation of the relay functions.

Learn mode was changed in V 1.4.00 to allow a channel to retain its prior programmed group through a learn session. This would only be of interest if you are not using Toolkit to configure the unit.

There have been a few minor bug fixes as well.. none of which affect normal operation, apart from a slight improvement in performance when network communications are marginal.
