So in this case it needs a formal report to tech support to get some paperwork opened and actions placed on the right people, who have to report back if or when its done, and explain why its not fixed etc etc etc

Whereas just posting to this forum relies on the goodwill of whoever happened to read it at the time...

    Guys,

Don't worry - I fully appreciate the position you are in, and that the ServerX stuff is not really in your domain.

The help you have given has been much appreciated and I have already followed Ashleigh's suggestion.

    Thanks again,

    Nick

Did anything come of this formal tech support request ? It does seem awkward that all the HomeGate marketing materials talk about ServerX but that the application is so hard to get hold of still, it's only a small application - is it not possible to web host it somewhere on a CIS site ?

ITMT What is the latest version of ServerX and is an installer now available that works with the latest C-Gate / CBus Toolkit ? I have from another CD version 0.55B - is that any good ? I wonder if someone who has a working version of Server X with HomeGate 3.3 could let me know what version they have.

Sorry. I think that there was no formal esclation to Tech Support, and from there to engineering, so not a lot has happened.

    There are 2 problems:

    1. ServerX is hard to find.

    2. ServerX is a pain to install.

No point fixing 1. until 2. is sorted.

Finally, some action on point 2 has been kicked off, though cannot promise when it will be sorted out. Once thats done I hope it can be put up on the downloads page.

    Fix for ServerX Install

I had the same problem with ServerX but have got a fix from the tech guys in Australia. It works as I have tried it.

    1. Uninstall toolkit, schedule plus and every version of java that shows
up in the 'add/remove programs' (in the control panel). (You don't need to uninstall Homegate or any saved settings by the way)

    2. Install C-Gate V1.5

    3. Install ServerX

    4. Uninstall C-Gate V1.5

    5. Install the latest Toolkit and Schedule Plus

    Cheers

    Angus

I have tried this and still hangs during install, where did you get c-gate 1.5 was it on the demo disc or is it a different version?

Why is there not a newer verson of server x compatible with the new versions of c-gate?

I'm seeing the same problem, i.e. get stuck on the installation screen.

If the solution is as per above, i.e. uninstalling the latest version of toolkit/c-gate and then installing an ancient version; then I find this completely unacceptable.

And to say it's not a Clipsal (Oz) product is a cop-out. I paid Clipsal for this software and it comes in a nice big Clipsal box.

I hope this is not the case.

The process listed is a work around.

    It enables you to operate.

An update to ServerX is on the CIS list and will be dealt with in time. Like any other company, priority is determined by many factors. If there is a suitable work-around, the priority of an update is naturally lower.

I beg to differ, the above is not a workaround. A workaround is changing a parameter here or there to make something work.

Rather it's the result of bad software engineering / testing.

All these products are under Clipsal control. Why was this not picked up when the new versions of Toolkit and C-Bus were tested? And a warning put out pro-actively?

Being in the software business myself, I fully appreciate the complexities of engineering software. However, in this case, one can't point fingers at Microsoft, Sun or whoever. And it's not a small feature, deep in the product that slipped through.

The product won't even install! How more basic can a problem be?

Would you accept a product if Microsoft told you to first uninstall everything on your PC, install Windows 95, then your app and then upgrade to XP?

Clipsal should test better. And take responsibility for their products.

    Server x

I have mangaed to load server X by removing all Java from the Computer and then installing Server X. Once Server X is installed you will ned to load Toolkit back onto the Computer. This will not effect any projects on your computer.
I have successfully used server X with Schedule Plus and HomeGate.
I had a slight problem with something else using the :8080 port but it seems to work fine now.
Be patietn with Server X I am sure the engineers will fix the loading of it.
