I think that this question is going to open me up to be hit with the stupid stick, but here I go anyway.
When I want to donload the latest version of Toolkit, do I have to download the whole version (including Java Runtime), or can I just download the cut down version (without Java Runtime). What will happen if I download and upgrade my version with the cut down version? Do I need to update the Java Runtime as well?

If you have the java runtime already installed then you don't need it. Of course it has to be a suffeciently late enough version. I'm not sure of the exact version required, but if you have installed the version included with the last few Toolkit releases you will be safe to down load the installer without java runtime.

If you have a recent Java runtime on your machine already you can download and install the cut-down version without any problems.

We only provide the Java runtime to make sure you keep relatively up to date with any bugfixes that may occur in the Sun Java product. But there are no known problems running a slightly older runtime.

    Cheers :)

If you have a slightly oldishJava runtime, you may get a nag thingy in your system tray from Sun. It's a bit like a Windows Update popup, if your system is set to NOT auto-download MS fixes.

I currently have one on my laptop which I keep dismissing... guess I should say "yes" and get rid of the bloody thing, but it has some inbuilt detection device and only pops up when I am doing something else that is FAR more important than it is

You can disable that auto-popup-nag thingy.

From memory, go into the Control Panel, double-click Java.

On one of the Java control tabs somewhere in there is the option to DISABLE automatic updates.

I turned it off because having the auto-update nag turned on drives me nuts.
