With some of the recent discussions about using DALI with C-Bus, here's a question for integrators/installers who use/specify DALI in installations..

Something that puzzles us propellerheads here is what is the real world advantage of DALI over DSI?

In what situation(s) would you choose DALI over DSI, and why?

    Hello DALI

The most common 'claimed advantage' of DALI over DSI is DALI's ability to report back failed Ballast or Tube info for and individual light fitting on the DALI network verses DSI's ability to only report back a failed lamp somewhere on the DSI network (ie one output channel of a DSI driver)

Individual Ballasts (up to 64) on a DALI network can be turned on or off individually where as all DSI ballast loads (up to 100) on a DSI network will all work as one.

The 'advantage' of this is that routine maintainence scans can pick up failed fittings and replacement tube (plus maintainence bod) can be dispatched to the location and bingo. The opposite argument is that the person in the effected room is likely to have already phoned in to report the dud tube before the scan takes place. As to whether the maintainence dept is more likely to dispatch tube, bod and ladder in response to a phone call, the result of a scan or at all is open to question ;)
